Afternoon Haigh Community,
I hope everyone is enjoying his or her summer vacation! I am writing today to inform you of the number of classrooms per grade level this school year and provide some background information on how our instruction has changed over the past few years. I am excited to share with you how we have become a co-teaching school. This means that your student’s classroom teacher has been welcoming members of our resource staff into the room to provide support with students in small groups or one-on-one based on their academic needs. This is different from traditional education where only one teacher was responsible for the students in the classroom. We now have monthly meetings where we look at student data to drive our instruction. We are looking at student reading levels, math scores, writing skills, reading comprehension, and many other areas in order to provide them with the support or extension that they need. Meeting as a team, we are able to plan and share resources with one another. Our grade-level teachers have common preps where they meet weekly to plan for instruction and share ideas for student engagement. Our teachers are also using modern technology and instruction through the use of Google classroom, instructional websites aligned to student learning levels (Reading Eggs, Readworks digital, Mathseeds, Newsela, RAZ kids, etc..) interactive whiteboards, hands-on manipulatives, and much more. We are also constantly assessing your students’ instructional levels by meeting with them in small groups, one-on-one, and with the use of formative assessments. The co-teaching is implemented with the sharing of these results and discussing how we can best help or extend our students’ educational levels. It is very common to enter into a classroom at Haigh and see 2 or 3 teachers working with students in that room. I believe this is extremely important, especially in an elementary school, and has been one of our keys to success. Below, you will see the number of classrooms this school year and a letter to our 1st and 2nd grade parents about having a 1/2 split classroom. In developing our classes at Haigh, we have extensively planned to make sure we constructed rooms that will provide the maximum time possible for direct instruction, classroom support, and student success. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to another great year at Haigh!
